The auto industry is booming. Several EV manufacturing startups and big auto companies have introduced substantial numbers of new Electric Vehicles (EV) in India. The popularity of two-wheeled electric vehicles has grown far quicker than that of four-wheelers.
As a result, numerous companies have begun to introduce electric versions of their two-wheelers, keeping in mind its future potential. According to a new report, Piaggio, whose subsidiary brands include Vespa, is planning to enter the EV market in India. According to a recent rumor, the Italian manufacturer intends to produce an electric scooter tailored for the Indian market.
Piaggio currently makes three-wheelers in the country, but its subsidiary brands Vespa and Aprilia also produce two-wheelers. Both Vespa and Aprilia are likely to release electric scooters built in India in the near future.
Piaggio’s Vespa electric scooter was designed specifically for the Indian market
According to ET Auto, Diego Graffi, the managing director of Piaggio India, has hinted that the business plans to build an EV ecosystem in India that will be self-sustaining even without subsidies. Let us inform you that the federal government gives FAME II subsidies, and several state governments across the country provide subsidies that reduce the cost of electric vehicles by up to 40%.
However, it appears that the two-wheeler manufacturer has no plans to launch the EV anytime soon, and Piaggio’s first electric two-wheeler may take some time to come to India. The Indian supplier ecosystem, according to Graffi, is unprepared to handle a large shift to electric mobility.
Launch Date Expected
Piaggio expects the creation and testing of an India-specific vehicle to take 18-24 months. As a result, following development and testing, the EV will be released on the Indian market. Piaggio’s forthcoming electric scooter is unlikely to arrive in India before the end of 2023.
According to Rushlane, Piaggio will focus primarily on creating electric scooters for the Indian market, rather than motorcycles. As a result, the electric scooter will most likely be sold under the Vespa name.
The Piaggio e-scooter will incorporate the newest connectivity technologies found in modern EVs, and the price will likely be comparable to other EVs now on the market in India.
Electric scooters are already available in developed European markets. Last year, the business unveiled the first electric scooter under its own brand, dubbed ‘One.’ Elettrica electric scooter was also on display in India during the Auto Expo 2020.
In India, various EVs are currently available, including the Hero Electric, Ather 450, Ola S1 series, Bajaj Chetak, and TVS iQube.
